New Railroad Switchers, Clean Buses: D.C. Unveils Plans For Spending Volkswagen Settlement

The District says it plans to spend its portion of a national settlement with Volkswagen on new locomotive switchers for Union Station and electric buses that serve communities more adversely affected by air pollution.

D.C.’s final plan, which was unveiled on Friday, puts the city’s $8.125 million portion of the settlement towards three projects: $2.3 million to help Amtrak upgrade diesel-powered switcher locomotives at Union Station to cleaner alternatives; $5 million to buy new electric buses as well as electric and natural-gas trash trucks; and $89,000 on rebates for tailpipe pollution reduction retrofits.
