Another distinguishing characteristic is the Discovery’s 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine, which produces 254 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and 443 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750 rpm and 2,250 rpm. An 8-speed automatic transmission powers all four of the Discovery’s wheels through a 2-speed transfer case with a locking center differential.
With nearly 5,000 pounds to motivate, before adding people, cargo, or a trailer, this engine doesn’t produce blistering acceleration, but its swell of low-rpm torque certainly is satisfying. Land Rover claims the Discovery diesel will get to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds, and can achieve a top speed of 130 mph.
