A new breed of US escort tug arrives

Ava M McAllister a new breed of escort tug designed to service ultra-large container ships and very large crude carriers, docking and unberthing at US east coast terminals.

It has low sulphur and nitrogen oxide emissions and more than meets the requirements for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 compliance, having EPA Tier 4-certified marine diesel engines that power Z-drives with fixed pitch propellers.

Eastern built Ava M McAllister at the Allanton shipbuilding facility and delivered it to McAllister Towing on 31 March 2019. This 30.5-m tug has 12.1 m breadth and 5 m hull depth. It has total power of 5,050 kW, which comes from two Caterpillar 3516E diesel main engines that each develop 2,525 kW of power at 1,800 rpm.
