Honoring America’s Farmers: National Agriculture Day

National Ag Day works to help us value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy as well as understand the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant and affordable products. Diesel technology helps us realize our agricultural bounty while the latest generation of diesel technology helps us deliver this bounty with minimal impact to our environment.

In today's hyper-connected, digital world, let us pause for a moment to honor America's farmers on National Agriculture Day... March 14. Originally founded in 1973, the event celebrates the abundance provided by agriculture. America's farms have seen a transformation of technology in those years as diesel engines and equipment became a vital partner in helping to revolutionize agricultural productivity and efficiency to realize America's agricultural bounty.

In the agricultural sector, there is no cost-effective substitute for diesel engines with the same combination of energy efficiency, power and performance, durability and reliability. Diesel dominates the entire "farm supply chain" from planting the product, tending the crop including watering, fertilizing, and applying pesticides, harvesting the product and finally bringing the product to market by truck, barge or rail.

A new generation of clean diesel technology that couples significant emissions reduction with advanced fuel savings and productivity enhancement is a game-changer for farmers in America and ultimately around the world. Equipment manufacturers have been able to couple fuel savings capabilities while meeting strict ‘Tier 4' emissions standards that reduce to near zero levels of emissions by enhancing the clean diesel system that combines ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, advanced clean burning diesel engines, and emissions control and exhaust aftertreatment systems. These "Tier 4" machines are capable of doing more work than ever before, boosting the farm economy and contributing to improved air quality. Clean diesel equipment helps farms in the U.S. become the most productive and economically valuable in the world.

The esteemed American wit, Paul Harvey, summed up the importance of America's farmers in his poem, "God Made a Farmer" which concludes:

And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer.

In honor of our farmers, we share this video highlighting Paul Harvey's words that came to us from Dodge Ram Trucks Super Bowl 2013 ad.
