Irrigation Pump Replacement Project
Project Location Bakersfield, CA
Project Description The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), provides about 50% of the cost of new diesel irrigation pumps for agricultural use. The average cost of these pumps is between $13,000-$25,000 depending on pump size, etc. In Federal Fiscal Year 2003, nearly $2.7 million in funding was available for approximately 250-270 diesel-powered engines replaced by farmers and ranchers in California's San Joaquin Valley.
Replacing existing irrigation engines with newer, cleaner-burning engines results in a reduction of up to 1.5 tons of NOx per year, per engine. Overall, the EPA expects the USDA to make available a total of $12 million over the next several years, thereby potentially reducing up to 1,600 tons of NOx from the air in San Joaquin Valley.
