Hot Issues in the Golden StateLow Carbon Fuel Standard and Clean Diesel Technology
Low Carbon Fuels are one strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and they are getting heightened attention in California and in Washington policymakers. Clean diesel can play an important role in reducing the carbon footprint of transportation. Click here to find out more. Low Carbon Fuel Standards and the Role of Diesel: Frequently Asked Questions. Diesel Forum Questions Long Beach, CA’s Decision to Use LNG TrucksThe diesel industry is questioning a recent decision by the Port of Long Beach harbor commissioners to replace at least half of their current port drayage diesel trucks with trucks powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Industry leaders have questioned the use of public funds for this project, and whether LNG trucks are superior to new or retrofitted clean diesel trucks. Click to read more. California Asks EPA to Regulate Non-Road Greenhouse Gas Emissions
California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown, Jr. is petitioning the EPA to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for equipment in the construction, mining and agricultural industries. The petition states that the EPA has the authority and duty to adopt national emissions standards for non-road engines and vehicles, and asks the agency to adopt regulations to carry out emissions limits for such machines. CARB Conditionally Verifies Caterpillar Diesel Particulate FilterThe California Air Resources Board (CARB) has conditionally verified Caterpillar’s Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) for off-road diesel engines for equipment manufactured between 1996 and 2008. CARB Increases Staff for Diesel Emissions Testing, Climate Change ProgramDespite a budget shortfall of $14 billion and a cut in state operations in 2008, Californians will soon see an increase in CARB staff. With only 5 percent of their operating budget coming from the state’s General Fund, CARB has received a funding increase of $10.2 million and will hire nearly 50 new staff members. New employees will handle diesel emissions testing programs, AB 32 climate change programs, AB 118 alternative fuel and vehicle programs and other responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of these clean air issues. California Overview
Diesel is Essential to California's EconomyThe largest economy of any of the 50 United States, California's gross state product (GSP) would rank eighth in the world if California were its own country. The workhorse of California's economy lies in diesel fuel which provides a vital link in the movement of people, products and services throughout the state. Of the production of these sectors, $12.4 billion can be attributed to the use of diesel technology. Diesel technology is integral to California's economic health and the state's efforts to meet clean air objectives and reduce petroleum dependence. Diesel engines are cleaner than ever before and in the next several years, diesels will achieve parity with the emissions of comparable gasoline or alternative fueled engines. Diesel is the most energy-efficient internal combustion ever designed. Diesel fuel is also amazingly efficient -- containing about 30 percent more energy per gallon as compared with gasoline. These attributes are ensuring clean diesel's place in California's efforts to improve air quality today and in the future. |
