Truckers Hit The Brakes Over Fuel Standards

Trucking interests are opposing what they describe as an unrealistic Senate bill that would mandate increased fuel mileage standards for trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds.
The Senate’s move comes as Washington suddenly is rediscovering fuel mileage standards. After lagging for two decades, automobile Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards are being raised to require automakers to make cars that average 35 miles per gallon by 2020. The current CAFÉ standard is 27 mpg for cars.
Allen Schaefer, president of the Diesel Technology Forum, an industry trade group for diesel truck makers, said it’s wrong to pass the same regulations covering passenger trucks to heavy-truck fleets.
