There are four basic types of backup generators - diesel, gasoline, natural gas and propane - each with its own strengths and weaknesses, she said. Diesel generators are tried and true, the fuel is easy to get and they're becoming less stinky and noisy. Gasoline generators have a following because that fuel also is easy to obtain, but Carter was not as keen on their engine life and noted that if a person keeps spare gas around for longer than six months, it can take on the viscosity of a lacquer or a varnish and become difficult to burn.
