Port Makes Switch to Cleaner-Burning Fuel
The Virginia Port Authority's operating company has completed a switch to ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel - a switch that comes three years before a federally mandated change for ports to use cleaner-burning fuel.
By order of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, all ports were to begin using low-sulfur diesel fuel by July 1. By July 1, 2010, all ports must be using the ultra-low version. VIT owns 500 pieces of equipment now burning ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel.
The fuel can be used in all diesel-powered equipment without changes to the engine, and an average across-the-board emissions reduction of 10 percent is possible, said Heather Mantz, the VPA's environmental director. Click here to read the full story.
