Officials Approve Fee Plan For Port Cargo

Authorities said the fee is needed to improve the flow of goods through the nation's largest seaports.
"This fee is essential to the ports' progress in cutting the amount of traffic congestion and diesel pollution at the ports," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who estimated the ports handle more than $300 billion in cargo annually.
Commissioners from both ports unanimously approved the measure at a joint meeting Monday in Long Beach, despite some opposition from retailers, farmers and others who argued it would hurt profitability. Read the full story.
