MTA Looks To Purchase 30 Hybrid Buses
The Maryland Transit Administration is looking to replace some of its aging buses with 30 fuel saving diesel hybrid buses.
If the state Board of Public Works approves the purchase, 80 percent of the $26 million dollar price tag would be covered by federal funds.
The board is scheduled to consider the proposal at a regular meeting Feb. 27.
The purchase would bring the MTA’s fleet of hybrid buses to 40. Ten were purchased in 2005. The vehicles run on a combination of diesel fuel and an electric battery and are made by a company in Canada.
While the buses cost about 50 percent more than conventional buses, they use about 40 percent less fuel.
