Fuel Costs Forcing Schools To Think Creatively

Old No. 24 won't be belching its black smoke much longer.

The old two-cycle, diesel-powered Crown bus will be replaced by a new school bus that pollutes less and gets two to three times better fuel mileage. The bus is one of five that will be replaced in the Eastmont School District fleet this year, thanks to a $226,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Ecology. The total cost of the five buses is $560,000, with the difference to be made up by the school district.

"If anyone has ever been behind Bus 24, you'll appreciate this grant," said Eastmont Superintendent Garn Christensen.
