Diesel Industry Pleased To Join Midwest Clean Diesel Group

CHICAGO, January 23 - The Diesel Technology Forum today expressed its pride in having the opportunity to join the Midwest Clean Diesel Leadership Group, the goal of which is to reduce emissions from 1 million existing diesel engines by 2010.

"The diesel industry is proud to be an active participant in the Midwest Clean Diesel Leadership Initiative,"said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum.  "The diversity of supporters stepping forward to join together for this program speaks volumes about the universal agreement that cleaner diesel means cleaner air for all of us, and the industry is committed to doing its part. Opportunities for upgrading the existing diesel fleet are now greater than ever, and diesel retrofit programs have proven time and again to be one of the most cost-effective ways we can reduce emissions, help improve air quality and promote environmental progress."

The Midwest Clean Diesel Leadership group is a voluntary coalition of industry, non-profit and government groups that was created to assist in efforts to reduce emissions by the on-road and off-road diesel fleet not currently addressed by the U.S. EPA. The primary charge of the group is to show that continued unity between the public and private sectors is essential to achieving clean diesel and clean air goals. They are meeting today in Chicago.

"Many of the same clean diesel technologies developed for new engines can be applied to older vehicles and equipment in existing fleets to reduce emissions and improve performance," Schaeffer added. "There are a number of options available for modernizing and upgrading existing diesel engines."

Clean diesel retrofit is one of the most cost-effective strategies to achieving real and immediate air quality benefits. Cities and states striving to meet stringent new federal clean air requirements are turning to diesel retrofits to help improve air quality.
