Cleaner Ships and Trains Headed Our Way
Last week the EPA announced a proposed rule to significantly reduce emissions from marine and locomotive engines. Administrator Johnson’s plan calls for tighter emission standards for new trains, boats and ships, and the application of effective after treatment devices for existing engines that power these vehicles. The overhaul of these engines would be similar to the revamp that is taking place with heavy-duty trucks. In the end, trains and ships would see a reduction in emissions by about 90 percent.
A great deal of research, development and testing will be required to make this proposal a reality. But the diesel industry is committed to this process and already working to improve emissions from these engines through the use of ultra-low sulfur diesel, scheduled for full distribution to these sectors in the next few years.
On land or by sea, the clean diesel revolution is well underway. The transformation started with clean diesel fuel last fall, moved on to heavy-duty engines at the turn of the year, and now has its sights set on trains and marine vessels.
