EPA Hails Dodge for Developing Cleanest Heavy-Duty Diesel Pickup Truck

When you think of a heavy-duty pickup, you usually think of power, torque and the ability to carry a big payload. From now on, new clean-diesel technology is helping automakers meet the national goals of fuel economy and energy security.

On Jan. 23 at the Washington, DC Auto Show, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, Chrysler Group and Cummins unveiled what the agencies and the industry are calling the cleanest mass-production diesel engine pickup truck on the market.

The 2007 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty uses clean air technology and has the first diesel engine that meets the 2010 emissions standards in all 50 states -- three years ahead of deadline.

This modern diesel engine technology offers a significant opportunity to reduce fuel consumption and the dependence on imported oil. In fact, diesel engines provide up to 30 percent better fuel economy when compared to equivalent gasoline engines -- especially important in these days of see-sawing fuel prices. And, perhaps more important is the technology that eliminates some emissions by as much as 90 percent.

Trucks using this breakthrough technology will be available at dealers next month.
