Winners Announced in First-Ever “Why I Love My Diesel” Essay Contest!December 20, 2005 The Diesel Technology Forum announces the winners of the “Why I Love My Diesel” essay contest. Diesel enthusiasts nationwide were asked to profess their love of their diesel car, pickup truck or SUV and win a fuel card from sponsor BP/ARCO. DTF received many creative, well-written entries that showed how many people have a passion for their diesels. First place winners are Sandi Buley of Ventura, CA and Scott Weaver of Cypress, TX. Sandi and Scott both received a $150 fuel card. Buley took first prize with a poem about her two diesel vehicles. Weaver’s essay describes how his diesel truck safely carried him out of the path of Hurricane Rita when other vehicles were running out of fuel. The runner-ups are Dot Skorski of Coventry, RI and Jeff Straits of Middletown, MD. They each received a $50 fuel card. Read their essays. With gas prices hitting new record highs, U.S. consumers are increasingly turning to diesel-powered vehicles as a high-performance and fuel-efficient alternative to gasoline. Consumers realize that diesels are clean, quiet, and fun to drive. A new analysis of data from R.L. Polk & Company shows that annual registrations of new diesel passenger vehicles in the U.S. - including cars, trucks and SUVs - has grown nearly 56 percent during the past five years. Concurrent with rising sales of diesel vehicles has been a greater availability of diesel fuel at local filling stations. According to another new report commissioned by DTF, "Consumer Accessibility to On-Highway Diesel Fuel," diesel is now available at nearly half (42 percent) of fueling service stations across the country. “As a leader in clean fuels, BP is proud to partner with DTF and hear from consumers who have experienced the benefits of owning a diesel vehicle,” states BP representative Ken Kimura. “With cleaner diesel fuel rolling out nationwide next year, the potential for diesel vehicles in the U.S. can expand even further.” # # # The Diesel Technology Forum brings together the diesel industry, diesel user community, public interest leaders, government regulators, academics, scientists, and public health researchers to encourage the exchange of information, scientific findings and points-of-view to current and future uses of diesel technology.
