Why I love my diesel!
On Thursday, September 22nd of this year, a category 5 hurricane named Rita was forecasted to be heading directly for Houston, Texas.
Just as everyone witnessed on television all of the roads heading away from the coast were completely overwhelmed by the number of people trying to get out of the storm's path.
I was one of those people. I was heading to my fiancée’s home north of Huntsville, which is normally 1 to 1.5 hr trip max. On this particular day it took nearly 7 hours!
The road I was on was a virtual parking lot. There were dozens of cars and trucks on the side of the road which had ran out of gas idling in line trying to evacuate. I witnessed 2 fights at a gas station along the way where people were fighting over fuel. It was at this point that I was truly glad to be driving a diesel.
Not only was my Ford F250 Crewcab loaded completely full of my supplies (food, water, first aid stuff, etc.), but I also was pulling my gooseneck trailer with welder/generator and my 4-wheeler.
Not only did I not run out of fuel like the other cars, but I barely even came off of full !!!!! And that was with the A/C running, cell phone charging, and also powering my portable GPS unit. I made the entire trip to Huntsville and eventually all the way back to the Houston area pulling the gooseneck and I still have 3/4 of a tank left to go.
So while everyone else is waiting in long lines at the pumps trying to find fuel, I was able to go check on all of my family in the Houston area and be one of the first to report back to work to get things back to normal. It's this kind of reliability, economy, and power that make me a diesel owner from now on.
