Clean Diesel Technology Tour Event Details

The Clean Diesel Technology Tour visited Sacramento and covered the length and breadth of the diesel industry from fuels to cars and trucks to vehicles essential to our economy like this Caterpillar backhoe, which was brought as an example of Caterpillar Emissions Solutions' retrofit technology. The backhoe was joined by an International dump truck that was out fitted with Cummins Emissions Solutions technology, an International school bus that had been retrofitted with a particulate filter and displays from Corning and Johnson-Matthey.

General Motors brought some of the latest diesel technology to the Clean Diesel Technology Tour in the form of a San Joaquin Rapid Transit District diesel-electric hybrid bus. At the event's opening reception representatives from California state government (Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee in the photo) including members of the legislature and staff, regulatory staff and members of the governor's staff mingled with DTF members and learned more about clean diesel.

Cummins was well-represented at the Clean Diesel Technology Tour in Sacramento with everything from this display of retrofit hardware from Cummins Emissions Solutions to a 2010 emissions-compliant Dodge Ram pickup to a Kenworth Class 8 truck with a 2007 Cummins ISX engine. The Cummins Kenworth was joined on the floor by 2007 engine-equipped representatives from all five major engine manufacturers -- Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, International and Volvo-Mack.

The Clean Diesel Technology Tour stopped in California's state capital, Sacramento, on April 18 and 19 -- the largest gathering of clean diesel technology and executives ever presented. More than 150 DTF members and guests took part in the varied program over the two-day period, which included a display of the latest 2007 and even a 2010 emissions-compliant on-road vehicles, displays of Tier III tractors, a light-duty diesel vehicle ride-and-drive, a clean diesel fuel display, and a half-day information program that included keynote speeches from state Sen. Alan Lowenthal, Cal-EPA Undersecretary Dan Skopec and Engine Manufacturers Association President Jed Mandel.

In addition to the display and presentations, DTF members spent a full day meeting with California state legislators to discuss clean diesel issues. A reception titled "Diesel Got Game" welcomed legislators and staff, regulatory staff, media and guests to informally meet DTF members and view the display of equipment, which represented the breadth of the diesel industry from fuel to light-duty vehicles to heavy-duty trucks and buses, including some of the most recent technology such as a plug-in hybrid school bus.

Presenting at the event were executives from Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere, General Motors/Allison, International Truck & Engine, Robert Bosch and DaimlerChrysler. Media coverage of the event has already begun appearing and will be highlighted on the DTF website. A more detailed recap of the event also is being compiled and will be presented to the membership.

At the Clean Diesel Technology Tour, DTF revealed the results of a public opinion poll of Californians that showed a deep concern about climate change and the state's reliance on imported energy, but that a majority view clean diesel technology as a positive solution to both problems.
