Clean diesel technologies have arrived and can be applied to older diesel vehicles and equipment to significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality. This session will provide an introduction to diesel retrofit, answering questions such as What is retrofit? Why should diesel vehicles be retrofitted? How should organizations and communities go about retrofitting their fleet? Meant as an overview for planners and policymakers, the session will also address the air quality benefits of retrofitting for the development of State Implementation Plans (SIPs) and meeting transportation conformity concerns.
“Defining Diesel Retrofit”
Fred Schmidt from Donaldson Company will provide an introduction to diesel retrofits including an overview of how the technologies work, the types of vehicles/equipment that can be retrofitted and some basic cost considerations.
“Community Benefits of Retrofit”
Sarah Siwek from Siwek and Associates will focus on the value of diesel retrofit, not just for the vehicle owner, but to the entire community. Looking beyond retrofit’s air quality benefits, Sarah will highlight its cost-effectiveness and its value to communities that are either in non-attainment or on the verge of falling into nonattainment with new emissions standards. Particular attention will be focused on the contribution retrofits can make to SIPs and the role they can play in helping with conformity determinations.
“Bringing Retrofit Projects to Fruition”
Brett Alkins from Caterpillar Emissions Solutions will provide some guidance to policymakers and planners who wish to promote such projects but don’t know where to begin. What are the questions that you should be asking? Who should be involved in the process? Where are you going to get the funds to pay for the retrofits? In addition to identifying key resources, Brett will highlight a few cases to provide insight into how projects were selected and what factors influenced decisions throughout the process.
