Diesel Retrofit Technologies – Availability, Performance and Cost

During this 90 minute session, participants will learn about a variety of retrofit technologies including how the technologies work, the suitability of the technologies for various applications and considerations that should be factored into any final technology choice. Information about relative emissions reduction levels, maintenance requirements and other operating conditions - including the use of renewable fuels - will be addressed.

Marty Lassen from Johnson Matthey will provide an introduction to the workings of retrofit technologies ( DOCs, DPFs, SCR, Lean NOx traps, etc.), and their rates of effectiveness in reducing PM & NOx emissions. Marty will then give an overview of currently verified technologies, some insight into new technologies which may be on the horizon and some commentary on the use of biofuels with these products.

Ken Katch, Director of Caterpillar's Emissions Solutions Group with provide an overview of different diesel retrofit applications including school & transit buses, trucks, construction equipment, locomotive, and marine. In each case, Ken will highlight the most popular retrofit technologies used to date and specific considerations for that application (ie. duty cycle, age of vehicle, availability of options, maintenance, fuel economy).

Finally, Kevin Benson with Cummins Power Systems will build on the information already presented to help a fleet manager determine his/her strategy and action steps for getting a retrofit project off the ground and seeing it to completion. Kevin will work to answer questions such as: How does a project manager determine what technology to use? Which vehicles/equipment should be given priority? What trade-offs should be weighed? What cost and timing considerations should be factored into final decisions?
